19th Annual CEE and Turkey Refining and Petrochemical Conference will take place on September 19th-21st, 2016, in Izmir, Turkey. The summit connects European technology providers and suppliers with SOCAR and other CEE and Turkey operators, in a variety of formats that encourages doing business.
The past years have not been easy for the European refining and petrochemical market, with more competition from international markets and extremely low crude price. However 2015 saw a boom for European refiners producing naphtha first time in over four years. Taking advantage of cheap feedstocks, refiners have made the most of larger profit margins and producing higher value products. There has also been a huge focus on driving efficiency, cutting costs and adapting to change.
European refiners need to be able to compete globally, with increasing pressure coming from other regions, particularly in such a difficult economic climate with crude oil dipping below $30 per barrel and no clue as to when prices may go up. The sanctions being lifted from Iran at the beginning of 2016 have also meant there is extra pressure on an already saturated market as they increase productions and begin to export to Europe once more.
Turkey is still playing a hugely significant role within the region and is seen as a major player in the downstream market. Demand for petrochemical products is rising and with this increasing demand, good geographical location for exports, and new developments in Turkey (STAR refinery on the Petkim Peninsula) it is a developing and very attractive region for the downstream market.
Key Themes for 2016
- Integration between refining and petrochemicals
- Creation of chemical parks and modern clusters
- Operating in a “VUCA” world – Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity
- Energy Efficiency
- Case Studies from: SOCAR, Grupa LOTOS (CEEP member) & Tupras
